Halloween Hospital Horror MISTER MYSTERY "All, or Nothing at All!"

Mister Mystery was the host of his own self-titled horror anthology.
Though he looked like a jovial stage magician in a mask, his stories easily matched those of the Crypt Keeper and other ghoulish comics hosts..as you shall see!
For such an innocent-looking guy, Mister Mystery tells a nasty story, aided by illustrator Tom Feelings (yes, that's his real name) and an unknown author in this tale from Stanley Morse's Mister Mystery #14, (1953)!

HI-SCHOOL ROMANCE "Unfaithful" & "My Answer"

It's amazing how many romance comic stories involve doctors, nurses, or both!
Case in point, this tale from Harvey's Hi-School Romance #10 (1951), which despite the book's title, has nothing to do with high school!
Illustrated by John Sink and illustrated by an unknown scripter, this is an entertaining, but moderately-improbable tale.
However, when it was reprinted in Harvey's Hi-School Romance #68 (1957), the newly-created Comics Code Authority demanded numerous changes in the story...beginning with the very first caption and the title...
Interesting how much re-writing was done, eh?

Valentine's Day in the Emergency Room SOUL LOVE "Dedicated Nurse"

This story is unique because it is presented from scans of the hand-drawn art...
...from Jack (King) Kirby's proposed 1970s b/w magazine Soul Love!
We would have presented pages from the printed comic/magazine the way we usually do...except it wasn't published...until very recently!
(We'll explain below!)
NSFW / NSFS note...it is somewhat "politically incorrect"...but not for the reason you might think!
(Hey, look! A "Kirby Quote"!)
You'll note pages 5 and 6 aren't as "clean" as the other pages, which are scanned from the actual original art!
They're scanned from photocopies, which are the only versions I could acquire, but they're legible enough to "fill out" the tale!
(Oh, man! More "Kirby Quotes"!)
Written/penciled/edited by Jack Kirby and inked by Vince Colletta, the story takes the typical attitude of the period about overweight women, though Aleda's not actually obese.
(In fact, I was involved with a woman who had a similar body type, which I found extremely-appealing!)

You can read about the Soul Love magazine project by clicking HERE.
The Soul Love tales were finally published as a full-color comic book-style insert in 2020's Dingbat Love hardcover book, which we conveniently linked-to below!
Thanks to Kracalactaka for the scans.

LOVELORN "Helping Heart!"

Just when you thought they couldn't do anything else with a disease-themed romance tale...
...involving a doctor and nurse, this never-reprinted story from ACG's LoveLorn #3 (1949-50) comes along with a tale jam-packed with unexpected soap opera-style plot-twists!
Wow!
I'm exhausted!
So, jaded, manipulative girl loses handsome doctor to woman whose inherent innocence and purity of heart (and extreme work ethic) lures the MD to her...and she didn't even intend to do so!

SECRET HEARTS "David!"

Dont worry, neurotic Mary Robin R.N., isn't back...
...but, since this tale does present a romantic triangle with a nurse at one corner, that's an understandable assessment!
Written by Gerry Conway, penciled by Alex Toth, and inked by Dick Giordano (using the pen name "Ric Dano"), this cover-featured, never-reprinted story of two sisters, a guy, and misunderstanding from DC's Secret Hearts #149 (1971) is typical of the romance genre.
BTW, the reason Giordano used a pen-name is that he was the editor of the book, and technically, an editor wasn't supposed to edit their own material...whether it was script or art!
But it happened a lot more frequently than most thought, mainly due to tight deadlines!

Young Love PRIVATE DIARY OF MARY ROBIN, R.N. "Don't Let It Stop!"

Welcome back to the amorous adventures of our favorite neurotic nurse...
...but be warned, there's a shocking ending to this tale!
WTF???
A happy ending?
What could it mean?
This torrid tale from DC's Young Love #52 (1965) by writer Robert Kanigher and artist John Romita Sr was (despite the blurb at the end) the final Mary Robin story!
In addition, artist John Romita Sr left DC and moved to Marvel, where he immediately jumped head-first into Silver Age superhero sagas!
Within a year he was the artist on Daredevil, then Spider-Man!
By 1970, he was the Art Director of the entire company, while still penciling and/or inking numerous covers and occasional stories, until his retirement.
