Tales Twice-Told / Humor is the Best Medicine SHAM COMICS: CALLING DOCTOR SHAM "Patient in Room 405"

Yesterday, We Presented a Tale from a Comic Book That Utilized Near-Duplicates of Then-Popular TV Doctors...

...specifically, Ben Casey and Dr Kildare!

Half a century later, that comic (and many others in various genres) would be the basis of a series that took comics which had fallen into public domain, and rewrote them as comedies!

In the case of this story, it ignored the "clone the hot media medico" aspect since nobody today (exept us, apparntly) would remember the old TV shows, and just went for the medical jugular, as it were!

Meet the characters in their new incarnations...

...and now, on with the re-told tale...

Writer/designer Tim Fuller (who also writes and illustrates his own strips) did a kool job of adapting the cover-featured story from Charlton's Young Doctors #3 (1963) into the cover-featured story for Source Point Press' Sham Comics: Calling Doctor Sham V2N4 (2019).

But it's not due to a defect in his Iron Man armor!

It's what he's fueling his body with!

The Habit Heroes advise him about healthier food choices and...

Well, unlike the Captain America/Asthma Monster comic, there was never a sequel!

The rest of the comic features a couple of game pages as well as these full-page splash panels featuring the Habit Heroes and their adult supervisor.

I suspect they were also provided to medical offices as 11x17" (or larger) posters!

Various comic publishers have licensed their characters to organizations and corporations for health-related causes!

Our recent multi-post focus on a Marvel comic revealing Steve Rogers/Captain America had asthma as a kid was one such example!
Other comics covered diseases like cancer, the amazing contributions to public safety by nurses and EMTs during the Covid epidemic, and health-related situations like teen pregnancy and smoking!

You'll be seeing more of them in the future.

When is a Surgeon X story not a Surgeon X story?

When Rosa Scott MD, isn't the protaganist, but a supporting character in a tale involving her cousin, research scientist Dr Sun Walker!

Written by Sara Kenney and illustrated by Warren Pleece, this was a digital-only tale set in 2037, a year after the end of the mini-series.
There haven't been any more Surgeon X stories since the story's release in 2017.
But this potential future may be closer than you think...

Speaking of which, Just before issue #5 was released, artist John Watkiss passed away from cancer,.
The editorial page for this issue, which was about to go to press, was modified to present the tragic news, but comic websites like Bleeding Cool had already gotten the word out.

While the Surgeon X series hasn't (to date) continued, there was a one-shot digital comic published on-line, written by Sara Kennedy and illustrated by Warren Pleece, who assisted Watkiss with the art on #6!

You'll see that final, far more optimistic tale...
