CoronaVirus Comics REAL HEROES "Plague Vanquished"

Not all comic book heroes wear capes...
..as this tale of Edward Jenner, the doctor who saved us from smallpox, proves!
Who says comics ain't educational?
Not me, kiddo!
This never-reprinted story from Parent Magazines' Real Heroes #15 (1946) was one of several graphic dramatizations of Dr Jenner's achievement which has saved countless lives since its' introduction!
Depending on how long the Covid-19 lockdown continues, we may have time to run all of them!
Sadly, both writer and illustrator(s) are unknown!

CororonaVirus Comics WONDER WOMEN OF HISTORY "Bethenia Owens"

As Covid returns to threaten us all in the New Year...

...let's look at a pioneer woman who was also a medical pioneer!
Written by Julius Schwartz and illustrated by Paul Reinman, this tale from DC's Wonder Woman #37 (1949) was part of an ongoing non-fiction feature, "Wonder Woman of History" which ran in both Wonder Woman and Sensation Comics (which featured Wonder Woman, just as Action Comics features Superman and Detective Comics features The Batman)!
Interestingly, when these shorts were reprinted, it was only in the back of romance comics or in Superman's GirlFriend Lois Lane!
For example, this particular feature was re-presented in DC's Secret Hearts #35 (1956)!

Classics Illustrated NEGRO AMERICANS "Daniel Hale Williams"

A Black doctor was the first to do a then-radical surgical procedure that changed medical history!

...and this is his story!
Illustrated by Norman Nodel, this story is from the never-reprinted Classics Illustrated #169 (1969), subtitled Negro Americans: the Early Years!
Dr Williams is on the cover (also by Norman Nodel) along with Harriet Tubman, Booker T Washington and other historical Black figures...
...though, sadly, he's still the least famous of all of them...and the smallest one on the cover!
Curiously, this was the final issue of the legendary title's original run!
We can only speculate as to why...

Coronavirus Comics SCIENCE COMICS "Theobald Smith and Texas Fever"

...but now it's time to (sadly) return to reality, where a pandemic continues to threaten our very existence!
Whether the anonymous writer of this never-reprinted tale from Ace's Science Comics #5 (1946) didn't know that or ignored it for expediency is unknown.
In addition, artist Warren Kremer left out Smith's rather bushy beard!
Texas Fever has been all but eliminated, thanks to Smith's pioneering work!

CoronaVirus Comics SCIENCE COMICS "Walter Reed: the Man Who Conquered Yellow Fever"

...but here's another version of true events, with a somewhat different emphasis...
Rudy Palais, one of the more gruesomely-graphic artists of the Golden Age illustrated this never-reprinted tale from Ace's Science Comics #2 (1946).
In fact, some of Palais' work is excerpted in Fredric Wertham's Seduction of the Innocent!
And, yes, the subject of the story is the Dr Walter Reed the hospital in Washington DC is named after...and this is why it's named after him!

Fascinating!
A perfect example of the scientific method at work!
And, yes, that's the Dr Walter Reed the hospital in Washington DC is named after...and this is why it's named after him!
