M.D. "Worried Sick"

Perhaps the Last Thing You'd See a Comic Book Story About...

...is something that affects hundreds of thousands of people, but is rarely-discussed in public!

Writer Carl Wessler and artist George Evans tell this tale from EC's M.D. #4 (1955) in a calm, non-hyperbolic manner.
It's an example of the restraint EC was doing (and perhaps slightly overdoing) after the Comics Code took effect!

M.D. "Point of View"

What If a Tragedy in Your Life Could Help Someone Else...

...but you didn't know who it was?
In the 1950s, transplant surgery had a lower than 50% success rate.
It was usually considered a last resort when all else had failed.
Add that to the idea that a recently-deceased loved one would be "mutilated" or "disfigured" by contributing organs for transplant, and the emotional reaction you see in this story, done before organ donor consent cards began to be issued, is understandable!
On an artistic note: if this was the notorious pre-Comics Code EC Comics, you can bet the tale would end with the kid sitting there with empty eye sockets screaming something like "DADDY??? WHERE ARE YOU??? I CAN'T SEE YOU!!!"
And "Ghastly" Graham Ingels would've done something like this...
But, it's not, and Ingels ends up presenting a kinder, gentler, happier conclusion in EC's M.D. #4 (1955)!

M.D. "Shock Treatment"

Did you know electroshock therapy was once an automatically-approved method?

But some medical professionals realized the technique had its' limits...and some "off-book" uses!
Illustrated by George Evans and likely scripted by the book's editor Al Feldstein, this shocking (sorry, couldn't resist) story from EC's M.D. #3 (1955) showed the publisher could still sneak something past the extremely-restrictive Comics Code Authority!

M.D. "Complete Cure"

Would you want to live if it meant surviving without a major part of your body?
That's the question the patient in this tale must answer!
Though, officially, the writer is unknown, more than likely editor Al Feldstein penned this tale illustrated by Reed Crandall from EC's MD #5 (1955-6).
Crandall was a master of every genre from superheroes to romance to horror, bringing a clean, crisp style and an eye for accurate detail whether it was fashion, vehicles, or (in this case) medical instruments and equipment!

M.D. "Emergency"

How do medical personnel do their job when they can't see what they're doing?
(Cover by Johnny Craig)
That's the basis of this cover-featured tale from EC's M.D. #5 (1956)!
XXXXXXXXXXX
Illustrated by Graham Ingels and likely written by editor Al Feldstein,
It's scary to consider how much of our medical care is dependent upon a consistent power source.
But, that's why almost every medical facility is equipped with an emergency generator!
Note I said almost every medical facility, because there are those, especially in rural areas who still don't have one!

M.D. "A Case for the Books"

Here's a title that likely doesn't mean what you believe it means!

Think I'm kidding?
Read on...
So the title didn't refer to a unique medical procedure...but a piece of furniture!
In the dark days before ObamaCare, if you were one of the working poor, any major medical procedure could bankrupt your family since you likely couldn't afford medical insurance!
In some cases, a compassionate medical practitioner, especially one who handled fiscally-limited patients, would barter for services.
It's a situation far less common today than when writer Al Feldstein and artist Graham Ingels created this tale for EC's M.D. #2 (1955)!

M.D. "To Fill the Bill"

The embarrassing and humiliating inability to pay medical bills due to lack of income is nothing new...

...as this tale from over 75 years ago demonstrates!
This tale from EC's M.D. #1 (1955) is, sadly, as timely now as when it was created almost 80 years ago!
A union worker, who was making better than average money, still couldn't afford health insurance, likely since, in the context of the story, neither the company nor the union provided it.
This was common in post-World War II America, particularly in rural areas.
You can read more about it HERE.
With the decrease in both membership and influence of labor unions in the past couple of decades, the situation became even worse.
ObamaCare was intended to compensate for the lack of employer-provided care in these areas, but has been weakened by Republican Congressional legislation and Presidential executive orders.
It's slowly being restructured and revised to overcome these obstructions...hopefully before it's too late!
