M.D. "Right Cure"

Some people have always been suspicious of medical practitioners...

...as we sadly saw during the recent pandemic.
As this tale from EC's M.D. #3 (1955) by writer Al Feldstein and artist Graham Ingels shows, ignorance can be as lethal as disease!
At least the stupidity shown in this tale wasn't based on politicizing medicine, as happened during the CoronaVirus pandemic.
If that concept had been incorporated into this story, it would've been rejected as too far-fetched...even for comic books!

Military Medicine G.I. JOE "Medwick the Medic"

This never-reprinted comedic tale from Ziff-Davis G.I. Joe V2#11 (1952)...
...which isn't related to the action figures or spin-off comics/movies/etc., does contain unrealistic depictions of religion, yoga, and the practice of meditation.
Context is everything!
Keep in mind that this 1952 story, illustrated by George Oleson and probably written by editor Jerry (Superman) Siegel, takes place only a few years after Korea was split in two in 1945, when the North became Communist.
At the time, religion, though disapproved, was not persecuted if it was practiced behind closed doors.
As a result, it's not unreasonable to believe the North Korean troops shown here included numerous Buddhists.
Of course, the portrayal of yoga and meditation is exaggerated and played strictly for laughs.
BTW, though many of the characters in this tale were ongoing featured players, Medwick was a one-shot character.
Other, unnamed, medics were shown in stories before and after him.

Young Love PRIVATE DIARY OF MARY ROBIN, R.N. "No Tomorrow for My Heart" Part 2

RN Mary Robin devotes herself to her career, even avoiding becoming involved with Dr Will Ames, whom she loves from afar!
Fellow nurse Tess (who considers Mary a role model due to her dedication to the profession) tells her she's breaking off with her beau, Andy, because he wants her to give up nursing to become a housewife.
But one of Mary's patients, Ray Austin, has her starting to feel differently about her life choices...
I didn't know shaming nurses who considered giving up the profession was a thing!
Of course, this was 1964, when marriage often meant career women would leave the workplace to become housewives and mothers!
Today, such choices are almost extinct, with women handling both career and child raising (with considerable support from the significant others in their lives).
In fact, men becoming the primary caregiver/housespouse is now at an all-time high!

EMERGENCY! "Paramedics!"

These guys sure don't look like paramedics...
And, for the record, they aren't paramedics...yet!
Confused?
Just read on...
This text piece from the same never-reprinted issue of Charlton's Emergency! Magazine #1 (1975) explains the concept.
The story, written by Joe Gill, was adapted from an early draft of the pilot episode, "Wedworth-Townsend Act", of the 1970s TV series Emergency!
The script dealt with the then-new law allowing specially-trained firemen to administer more than basic first aid to accident victims.
The series, from producer/actor Jack (Dragnet) Webb was a companion show with his other ongoing series Adam-12.
There were several crossovers between the two series during their runs, including this pilot episode!
However, since two different comic companies had the rights to Emergency! and Adam-12, the comics themselved didn't do a crossover!
Though the series began in 1972, this b/w magazine and the companion color comic (which presented different stories) weren't introduced until the show's fifth season, in 1977.
BTW, this story adapts only the first 1/2 hour of the two-hour pilot.
The rest of the tale will be presented soon...
