...starts on a new path...medical crimefighter!

So Dr Pat's a liar?

Considering a medico's reputation is one of their primary assets, staging such an outlandish event to capture criminals seems like a poor way to handle the situation.
(Though to be fair, any number of costumed crimefighters, both male and female, have done similar preposterous things!)

Obviously writer Robert Kanigher, penciler Carmine Infantino, and inker Frank Giacoia disagree with my belief!

I'm not sure why the creatives made this alteration to the series' concept, but it becomes the overriding them for the remainder of the series.

Beautiful socialite or dedicated lab assistant!

Who will win the handsome doctor?

It's a romantic triangle...created by disease!

Fran Matera illustrated this tale of desires, decisions, and disease from Ziff-Davis' Cinderella Love #7 (1952).

The writer is unknown, but it could be the book's editor Jerry (Superman) Siegel!

OK, somebody has to come up with better story titles for this series!

Though the title is typical romance comics twaddle, the tale is anything but!

She's an amazingly-competent MD whom no barriers can keep from treating her patients!

This never-reprinted story from DC's Sensation Comics #96 (1950) began a change in the strip's concept, as Dr Pat began using her medical skills and feminine wiles against criminals!
The romantic triangle involving both her fellow doctor and the reporter would continue!

Coronavirus Comics SCIENCE COMICS "Theobald Smith and Texas Fever"

We had a month of weird and way-out fantasy...

...but now it's time to (sadly) return to reality, where a pandemic continues to threaten our very existence!

Note: Theobald Smith was, in fact, an MD (degree from Albany Medical College), though he didn't practice!

Whether the anonymous writer of this never-reprinted tale from Ace's Science Comics #5 (1946) didn't know that or ignored it for expediency is unknown.

In addition, artist Warren Kremer left out Smith's rather bushy beard!
Texas Fever has been all but eliminated, thanks to Smith's pioneering work!

Halloween Hospital Horrors DOCTOR STRANGE "Origin"

Easily the best-known super-heroic MD, both in costume and in his secret identity...

...Stephen Strange, created by plotter/artist Steve Ditko and scripted by Stan Lee, has been a mainstay of Marvel Comics since his debut in Strange Tales #110 (1963)!

(Stan Lee wrote the final scripts and was commonly credited as the sorcerer's creator or co-creator until a letter resurfaced that was sent to fan and academic Jerry Bails before the release of Strange Tales #110, in which Lee mentions the upcoming character and says: "'Twas Steve's idea." )

Trivia: You'll note Doc's not wearing his red Cloak of Levitation, nor the Eye of Agamotto!

That's because he wasn't gifted (by the Ancient One) the Cloak or the Eye until Strange Tales #127 (1964)!

Doc remained in Strange Tales (which was retitled Doctor Strange as of #169 [1968]) until its' cancellation as of #183 (1969).

He continued as a guest-star in various comics until 1971, when he became a regular in The Defenders and the lead feature in Marvel Premiere.

The Sorcerer Supreme finally regained his own title in 1974.

Since then, he's always had an ongoing title, with the current version running 416 issues.

Recently, Stephen regained the total use of his hands, and returned to practicing medicine while still serving as Earth's primary mystic defender, resulting in all sorts of ethical and practical dilemmas...

...involving his priorities as either healer or warrior wizard...

...and problems when the two careers overlap...

...(Talk about serious multitasking)!

The series ended unexpectedly, and now Doc is the Headmaster of a Xavier's School for Gifted Students-style academy for teen sorcerers in the new series Strange Academy!

Whether Strange still retains the delicate manual dexterity he re-acquired is unknown...
