Ever see the movie Crisis (1950)?

Cary Grant plays a doctor vacationing in a South American country, where a revolution is brewing.

He's grabbed by the dictator's (Jose Ferrer) police to operate on him since they don't trust any of the surgeons native to the country to keep the secret of the ruler's infirmity!
The sadly-unknown writer of this never-repinted story from DC's My Greatest Adventure #77 (1963) obviously based his script on is, adding a cybernetic variation of that concept!

Interesting that the whole story comes down to "turn off the device and reboot", which was all-but unknown back in 1963!

What If a Tragedy in Your Life Could Help Someone Else...

...but you didn't know who it was?

In the 1950s, transplant surgery had a lower than 50% success rate.
It was usually considered a last resort when all else had failed.
Add that to the idea that a recently-deceased loved one would be "mutilated" or "disfigured" by contributing organs for transplant, and the emotional reaction you see in this story, done before organ donor consent cards began to be issued, is understandable!
On an artistic note: if this was the notorious pre-Comics Code EC Comics, you can bet the tale would end with the kid sitting there with empty eye sockets screaming something like "DADDY??? WHERE ARE YOU??? I CAN'T SEE YOU!!!"

And "Ghastly" Graham Ingels would've done something like this...

But, it's not, and Ingels ends up presenting a kinder, gentler, happier conclusion in EC's M.D. #4 (1955)!

Classics Illustrated NEGRO AMERICANS "Daniel Hale Williams"

A Black doctor was the first to do a then-radical surgical procedure that changed medical history!

...and this is his story!

Illustrated by Norman Nodel, this story is from the never-reprinted Classics Illustrated #169 (1969), subtitled Negro Americans: the Early Years!

Dr Williams is on the cover (also by Norman Nodel) along with Harriet Tubman, Booker T Washington and other historical Black figures...

...though, sadly, he's still the least famous of all of them...and the smallest one on the cover!

Curiously, this was the final issue of the legendary title's original run!

We can only speculate as to why...
