MYSTERIES OF UNEXPLORED WORLDS "No. 9 Swanson St."

Matt Baker Illustrated Few Medical-Oriented Tales...

...that didn't involve a hot 'n heavy romance featuring a doctor, nurse, or both!
But, this never-reprinted story is one of them!
From Charlton's Mysteries of Unexplored Worlds #14 (1959), this Joe Gill-scripted, Matt Baker-penciled, and Vince Colletta-inked tale of a medical technician who eneded up at the wrong address wouldn't have been out of place as an episode of The Twilight Zone!

CoronaVirus Comics UNUSUAL TALES "Incredible Advice"

Most of pioneering Black comic artist Matt Baker's work on medical-themed comics...

...usually involved beautiful nurses in torrid romances!
But not this never-reprinted tale...
This story from Charlton's Unusual Tales #20 (1960), written by Joe Gill, penciled by Matt Baker and inked by Vince Colletta has a weird Twilight Zone vibe to it.
Was it coincidence or fate...or something more that lead him to this particular old farmhouse?
Was the kindly old couple a pair of messengers?
And how did his sudden obsession with blueberries come about?
If we knew the answers, this wouldn't be such an...Unusual Tale...would it?

DR TOM BRENT: YOUNG INTERN "Not All Doctors Are Doctors"

...despite being controversial as far back as the 1960s, when this never-reprinted tale from Charlton's Dr Tom Brent: Young Intern #5 (1963) was published!
Written by Joe Gill, penciled by Charles Nicholas, and inkd by Vince Colletta, it's surprising this story got past the Comics Code Authority, since it portrays an authority figure (Dr Edmond) using "vibrotherapy"as untrustworthy.

OUT OF THIS WORLD "Plague!"

Even when (believe it or not) created for benevolent purposes...
...a deliberately-contagious virus unleashed on the world is no laughing matter!
OK, how can we read other peoples' thoughts in our own dreams, as happens on pages 2 and 3?
Beyond that deliberately-deceptive plot element, this tale from Charlton's Out of This World #6 (1957) written by Charlton mainstay Joe Gill and illustrated by future Spider-Man and Dr Strange co-creator Steve Ditko hangs together fairly well!
Would someone deliberately-conceive and implement a biological weapon (whether for good or evil) today?
Some Reich-wingers believe the recent (and possibly retiurning) coronavirus epidemic was deliberately-engineered by Communist China!
What do you think, dear reader?

EH! "Young Dr Baloney!"

This parody is based on Young Dr Malone, a long-running radio (and TV) soap opera...

...about a handsome (and married) doctor who nurses and patients alike constantly lusted after!
Young Doctor Malone had a long run on radio (1939-60) which overlapped the TV version (1958-63).
Because both series aired daily Monday to Friday, the two incarnations had different casts and ongoing plotlines!
(Some series which ran weekly, like Dragnet, used the same cast members in both versions)
The show's creators/producers Betty and Ted Corday, later conceived and produced TV's Days of Our Lives, one of the few soap operas still on the air!
This spoof from Charlton's Eh! (1953), one of the many MAD comic clones of the era, was illustrated by Dick Ayers and likely written by the book's editor, Al Fago!

EMERGENCY! "Silent Death" Conclusion

...they had been trained as paramedics, but were unable to legally-use that training in life-or-death situations they encounter daily, due to legal restrictions.
That is about to change...

The story, written by Joe Gill, was adapted from an early draft of the pilot episode, "Wedworth-Townsend Act", of the 1970s TV series Emergency!
The script dealt with the then-new law allowing specially-trained firemen to administer more than basic first aid to accident victims.
The series, from producer/actor Jack (Dragnet) Webb was a companion show with his other ongoing series Adam-12.
There were several crossovers between the two series during their runs, including this pilot episode!
However, since two different comic companies had the rights to Emergency! and Adam-12, the comics themselved didn't do a crossover!
Though the series began in 1972, this b/w magazine and the companion color comic (which presented different stories) weren't introduced until the show's fifth season, in 1977.
BTW, this story from Charlton's EMERGENCY! #1 (1976) adapts the remainder of the two-hour pilot.
"Crusty Bunkers" was the nickname assigned to a varying team of artists who worked on assignments for packager Continuity Associates (who provided art for various Charlton projects including this and Six Million Dollar Man.)
This particular team consisted of Joe Brozowski, Joe Barney, Mark Rice, Sal Amendola, Carl Potts, Terry Austin, Bruce Patterson, Bob Wiacek and John Fuller with Dick Giordano and Continuity Associates owner, the recently-deceased Neal Adams, overseeing and also providing layouts.

Now let's see what happens to Gage and DeSoto...
